Conventional plaster and veneer plaster (2 coats) on an 1800's post and beam barn.
About six years ago, we moved our office and headquarters from our old location in Libertytown, MD to nearby Union Bridge.  Part of an old 1800’s barn was renovated and finished, and is now our office.  The remaining part of the barn is now used for material storage.
We wanted to leave the old beams exposed wherever possible.  First, we cleaned the beams with soap and water and a stiff brush.  After they had dried, we covered them with plastic to protect them.
The ceilings were done with three eighth inch (3/8") rock lath and conventional plaster.  Conventional plaster consists of one half inch (1/2") thickness of lightweight gypsum plaster applied over the rock lath.  The finish coat we used was "smooth finish plaster" done in an older, imperfect look.  This style of finish is similar to what would have been done in an old 1800's summer kitchen, or some other less important part of an 1800's home.  This look is very warm, and the conventional plaster absorbs heat in the winter and releases it in the evening.  Conventional plaster is very "green".
The two coat veneer plaster system was used only on the few interior walls, using the same finish as the conventional plaster.
There is a two story area as you enter the office that has an original loft from old beams and old flooring.  The look is quite pleasing.
